Original abstract
The effect of reagent purity on AC plasma electrolytic oxidation of titanium in aluminate–phosphate-based electrolytes has been studied under constant rms current conditions. The resultant coatings were examined by high-resolution electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction, revealing rutile, Al2TiO5, alpha-Al2O3 and gamma-Al2O3, with an aluminium-enriched outer region and phosphorus-enriched band near the coating base. A lower purity of the electrolyte led to an erratic voltage response and delamination of coating material in scratch tests. A thin chlorine-enriched region near the substrate, attributed to the inward migration of chloride ions during coating growth, is suggested to be the cause of the delamination. Deliberate additions of chloride to the electrolyte resulted in highly porous coatings.
