Profile

Teaching Profile

The Institute focuses primarily on language teaching, with compulsory English courses for the Bachelor’s degree being a key component of its activities. In addition, the Institute offers optional English courses at levels B1 to C1 to broaden students’ knowledge and skills, as well as courses in other foreign languages such as German, Russian and French. Students may take them in any combination and at any stage of the Bachelor’s or Master’s programme. Doctoral students are provided with courses of academic English and skills.

Apart from the compulsory and optional courses, the Institute organises events and workshops aimed at strengthening students’ skills in specific language areas (strategies for exam preparation, vocabulary development, etc.) or in soft skills (e.g. writing an effective CV).

Foreigners who apply to study at the Faculty in the Czech language are offered the opportunity to take a Czech language examination, which fulfils the requirements for proof of language level in the admission procedure.

Scientific Profile

The Institute is actively involved in developing teaching materials, creates educational videos, tutorials and interactive content for Moodle, and produces publications focused on language teaching in higher education.

Long-term attention has been paid to analysing students’ learning needs. This resulted in participating in the Global Engineers Languages and Skills network, which was founded at the Centre for Languages and Inter-Communication at the University of Cambridge.

The Institute’s effort is rooted in previously acquired experience and achieved success. The DEUMA project (Deutsch im Maschinenbau) won the European Language Label award. For many years, the Institute served as an accredited examination centre for the City & Guilds international examinations and earned the Best Centre Award. Organising conferences and participating in projects funded by the Czech Ministry of Education, the Development Programme for Internationalisation, the ESF EU Operational Programme “Education for Competitiveness” and other initiatives have enabled the Institute to gain international experience and establish valuable contacts, which facilitate its continuous professional development.
