Information Knowledge - Information Literacy
FSI-2IV Acad. year: 2024/2025 Summer semester
The course is aimed on FME students and gives basic information for their information literacy development.
Lessons are mainly focussed on effective searching of information sources. How to search, which tactics and strategies to use and how formulate search query. Students will learn where to search for print sources, where to find good quality free sources on the internet and which licenced databases they can use as BUT students. They will learn how to seach with online discovery search and how to use features of licenced databases. They will adopt basics of information ethics and critical suppose.
The course also touches other topics, important in futher studies or life – creative techniques, creative learning, effective reading, time and information management.
The course is held in distance form, through Moodle. Students can attend counsulting hours.

The condition for finalization the course is fulfill all tasks at least 50 %.
This course is lead in e-learning form. The faculty tutors check if the students has finished all of course's parts and the quality of processed or submitted tasks

Aims
This course is aimed at practical use of information sourses, institutions and the services they provide. The aim is to teach the student to work with the available electronic information sources with the possibility of their practical use during studies or scientific work.
The student should know after graduating:
- Search and choose the relevant source of information
- Know and use professional information sources in classic or electronic form
- Be able to effectively use various searchnig engines
- Using the library services for the study and the proffesion
- Work with scientific text
- Organize time and sources
- Understand ethic adn legal starndards from the world of information

The course is structured as six consequential chapters.
Chapter 1: Searching of information – principles and strategies
Chapter 2: Sources of print information – particular institutions and their services
Chapter 3: On-line sources of technical information – free online sources (open access), licensed databases
Chapter 4: Creative usage of sourses – creative learning, creative techniques, effective reading
Chapter 5: Ethics and responsibility of using information – ethics of information, critical suppose, media literacy
Chapter 6: Using online sourses – organizing of information, time management, information security
