Surface Modelling and CAS

FSI-YPA Acad. year: 2021/2022 Summer semester

Students will apply their previous knowledge of surface NURBS modeling and extend it with Class-A modeling techniques CAS (computer aided styling) and STRAK. They will get acquainted with the work procedures used in the transition from conceptual designs to the creation of a quality surface model suitable for further industrial manufacturing. The evaluation will take place on the basis of the submission of assigned tasks in consultation with an external expert from practice.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

Students will master the basic principles of work with the creation of the visible surfaces applicable particularly in the automotive industry in the field of class A modeling. The experience gained could be used by students of diploma work in collaboration with companies and especially in practice, where is a high demand for competent graduates.

Prerequisites

Knowledge of CAD systems (Rhinoceros 3D) and knowledge of classical or digital artwork.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

The course is divided to practical exercises from simple designs to precise surface making directly on the scanned data.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

Graded course-unit credit requirements: attendance in lessons, meeting assigned projects deadlines, practical test verifying the knowledge of work with the software and creative work ability.
Resulting evaluation consists of evaluations on projects, tasks and a test. In total it will be possible to aquire 100 points. Resulting classification will be defined by the ECTS scale.
If some of the projects and test are awarded less than half of the maximum pts., final evaluation of the course is "failed".
According to the article No. 13 of Study and Examination Rules of Brno University of Technology ECTS evaluation degree scale is used. . If some of the projects are awarded less than 50 pts., final evaluation of the course is "failed". The course is evaluated with the following grades: ECTS EVALUATION DEGREES / PTS. RATING / NUMERIC RATING: A / 100 – 90 / 1 / Excellent; B /89 – 80 / 1,5 / Very good; C / 79 – 70 / 2 / Good; D / 69 – 60 / Satisfactory; E / 59 – 50 / Sufficient; F / 49 – 0 / 4 / Failed.

Language of instruction

Czech

Aims

Mastering the basics of CAS (computer aided styling), advanced surface modeling and preparation of visible surfaces for industrial manufacturing.

Specification of controlled education, way of implementation and compensation for absences

The attendance at seminars is obligatory and checked by the lecturer. Students have to be present in scheduled hours in the computer laboratory, work on given projects and wait for consultation, unless a lecturer gives other individual plan. The excuse of absence is possible only due serious reasons such as illness. Unexcused absence may jeopardise awarding the graded course-unit credit.

Syllabus

1. Importance of CAS and STRAK in industrial practice, work process, golden rules, comparison of possibilities and nomenclature of functions of different software (Rhinoceros 3D, Autodesk Alias, ICEM-Surf)
2. Brief theory of surface modeling for practice, NURBS, B-Spline, orders, degrees, span point
3. Assignment of the first task – conceptual model
4. 2D elements – curves, their creation, classes of curves, tools span points, blend, align, transform CV, curvature analysis, creation of 2D graphics based on the underlying sketch.
5. Surfaces – creation of surfaces from curves, draft, skin functions, transform CV for surfaces, align of surfaces, analysis of surface curvature, highlight, quality control of surface connections.
6. Surface topology – segmentation, how it is formed, trimmed and uncropped surface, sharp model, simple blend transitions, radius, chord.
7. Typical solution of segmentation – system of composition of cut and uncut surfaces, transition from sharp model to model with blend transitions and radii.
8. Assignment of the second task – class A model
9. Typical solution of segmentation – examples of solution: concurrence of radii, trunk corner.
10. Typical solution of segmentation – examples of solution: Y concurrence of surfaces, canopy of rotating surface.
11. Independent work on a given task for a comprehensive practice of acquired skills. modification or completion of the entered background data. These are, for example, parts of the car's exterior: the tank cap, the rear washer cap, the roof with transitions to the windscreen and rear window, etc.
12. Tools for verification of traceability and overall quality of the model
13. Submission of a task evaluated by an expert from practice.
