Original abstract

Reoxidation of steel is a term for summary designation of secondary and tertiary oxidation of steel occurring during keeping the metal in a ladle after tapping it from a furnace and during casting in a mould cavity. During reoxidation the oxygen concentration and its activity in a casting are growing. In case that oxygen activity exceeds the equilibrium activity of oxygen with carbon the casting part or the whole casting can be afflicted with gas cavities of carbon monoxide. With higher oxygen activity the formations of oxides of elements with lower deoxidation ability (Mn, Si) continues. Those oxides can form in castings the extensive slaggy formations in their volume or on the casting surface designated as secondary slag inclusions. Thus the steel reoxidation directly influences surface and internal quality of steel castings and consequently the manufacturing costs too.
