Original abstract

Reverse Enginering (RE) is one of the most modern methods in the computer aided design and machining area (CAD/CAM systems). The basic principle of RE is conversion of the physical model to the virtual model, which is further used in CAD/CAM systems. In practice two types of RE are used now. The older type of RE is two-dimensional (2D) conversion. In this case existing 2D contour is converted into the CAD system. Drawings, technical papers, and 2D contours are most frequently used for CNC data preparation. The second modern type of RE appears as three-dimensional object conversion. The basis of this method is spatial object (an existing prototype or serial component, design pattern, etc.), which is converted to the virtual spatial model by 3D scanner application. Virtual model is modified to the required shape by the CAD/CAM system, further it is used for the prototype or serial production.
