Original abstract

The paper presents research of CFD simulation and comparison with real solar chimney characteristics. Two types of solar chimney have been built at Department of Thermodynamics and Environmental Engineering of the Brno University of Technology. The main goal of the experiments and simulations is to investigate the performance of the solar chimney under the climatic conditions of the Czech Republic, and to explore the potential of solar chimneys for ventilation of residential buildings. Both solar chimneys have been tested. Solar chimneys are connected in parallel each to other and placed in one casing. Dimensions of each are: width 750 mm, height 1500 mm and gap 200 mm. One of the chimneys contains a heat storage layer made of concrete to make the air flow rate through the chimney more uniform in time. This should also allow the utilization of the solar chimney for night cooling. The other chimney is equipped with metal plate absorption layer to achieve higher wall temperature. The solar chimney is oriented to the south and it is inclined 30 degrees from the vertical. The following parameters are monitored: flow rate induced by buoyancy, surface temperatures as well as air temperatures in the chimneys and meteorological conditions.

Czech abstract

Prvni komin ma akumulacni vrstvy vyrobenou z betonu, to proto abychom dosahli vice rovnomerne proudeni vzduchu kominem v prubehu dne. Byly porovnavany nasledujici parametry: prutok kominem iniciovany vztlakovou silou, teploty povrchu, stejne jako teploty vzduchu proudiciho ruznymi castmi kominu a celkove meteorologicke podminky.
