Original abstract

Magnetorheological dampers are known to exhibit non-linear hysteretic behaviour. The source of the mechanism is due to the compressible nature of the fluid as well as the magnetic hysteresis of the ferromagnetic materials constituting the control circuit of the actuator. In this study the authors reveal a lumped parameter model of the actuator based on the familiar Jiles-Atherthon hysteretic operator. In the paper the performance of the model is compared against a finite-element axi-symmetric model of the MR actuator subjected to a range of external stimuli.
