Original abstract

Polymeric hollow fiber heat exchangers were proposed about two decades ago as an alternative for low temperature applications. The paper provides a comparison of different structures of heat transfer surface design which differ mainly in the type of fibers used. It deals with the influence of two arrangements of fibers on the efficiency of heat exchangers (HEs). The first design uses a polymeric hollow fiber with an outer diameter of 0.8 mm and the second design is made of fiber with an outer diameter of 1.3 mm. These heat exchangers have the potential to be used in low temperature and low flow rate applications. A number of shell and tube polymer heat exchangers were made in various sizes and shapes and were tested. The heat transfer performance and pressure drops were studied using hot water. It was observed that the heat transfer coefficients of these devices were 400-1500 W/ (m2K) for water-water applications at the satisfactory pressure drops. Prototype units with a thermal power of up to 36 kW were tested.
