An experimental investigation of lubricant film formation in artificial hip joints

Durability of artificial hip joints is one of the most challenging task in the area of biotribology. As the number of surgeries still increases, it is necessary to better understand lubrication performance of replacements to avoid wear of rubbing surfaces eventually leading to implant failure. Although several studies provided satisfactory analysis about the wear, little is known about the lubrication mechanisms inside the contact. Therefore the motivation of our study is to better understand synovial fluid lubrication mechanisms in hip joint replacements.

Životnost umělých kloubních náhrad je jedním z nejvíce diskutovaných problémů v oblasti biotribologie. Jelikož počet operací neustále narůstá, je nezbytné lépe porozumět tribologickému chování náhrad s cílem zamezit opotřebení třecích povrchů vedoucímu v konečném důsledku k selhání implantátu. Ačkoliv již bylo publikováno mnoho studií ohledně opotřebení implantátů, prozatím nebyly dostatečně popsány mechanismy mazání uvnitř kontaktu. Proto je motivací této studie lépe porozumět mechanismům mazání synoviální kapaliny v kloubních náhradách
