Investigations are conducted in two main areas, thermal energy storage (TES) and pumped energy storage:
-
Thermal energy storage in phase change material – investigation of suitable materials, storage designs, and thermal behaviour of TES systems.
-
High-temperature thermal energy storage with a sand battery.
-
Increasing the efficiency of pumped storages by shape optimization of pumps/turbines.
-
Energy harvesting in water towers and water distribution networks.

- Laboratory of numerical simulations
The laboratory focuses on research, development and testing of numerically solved mathematical models in the field of energy engineering. Within the laboratory, we focus on modelling processes combining fluid flow, thermodynamic and mechanical processes, streamlining computational times, topological optimisations, statistical modelling and artificial intelligence. We perform both evaluations and designs of new systems. The laboratory includes a number of simulation software and computer equipment. More information here.
