Study aims

The focus of the two-year follow-up Master's degree programme is on academic competences and students are provided with advanced education in the field of aircraft design.
The student of mechanical engineering design will be acquainted with branches of physics (aerodynamics and mechanics of flight), design rules and procedures for aircraft design (atmospheric or cosmic) and will be presented with individual aircraft systems. Moreover, the graduates will be equipped with the knowledge of aircraft design, methods for aerodynamic analysis, aerodynamics formulas, load determination methods and strength analysis. Our students will be able to design aircraft systems and analyse the reliability of the systems.
As part of their studies, students will also get acquainted with English aviation terminology and will take part in an appropriate language training. As a part of their thesis, they will be required, under professional supervision, to come up with a technical solution to an engineering problem.
The main goal of the follow-up Master’s degree programme is to prepare professionals who can pursue a career in the field, in technology companies in the Czech Republic or abroad.

Graduate profile

The curriculum of our programme is designed to give the student well-rounded knowledge of aviation and aerospace. The students will be equipped with theoretical knowledge of aircraft design processes. They will acquire knowledge of aerodynamics, flight mechanics, theory of strength of aircraft structure and aircraft design. Moreover, they will get acquainted with the theory of reliability and service life of aircraft structures.
The programme focuses on several key professional competences and skills in the field of theory of aircraft structure strength theory, construction and aircraft design. The student will also learn about structural materials, their processing and effective use of weight when designing aircraft structure load-bearing parts. Moreover, the students will also learn the principles of designing aircraft with respect to production and operation technologies.
The graduate can pursue their career in design, mechanical engineering design or research and development departments in the aviation industry in the Czech Republic or abroad, basically everywhere where they can use their knowledge of design and production and systems with high durability. With the knowledge acquired, they can also participate in engineering activities dealing with flow.

Profession characteristics

Graduates can find a job in the aviation industry (Aero Vodochody, Aircraft industries, HONEYWELL, GE Aviation Czech) and many other smaller companies, but also in research at universities (BUT, CTU) and other research institutions (VZLU Prague) or abroad ( Airbus IW) as well as in other industries. Thanks to the dynamic growth of aviation industry and transport, our graduates have great employment prospects.

Fulfilment criteria

See applicable regulations, DEAN’S GUIDELINE Rules for the organization of studies at FME (supplement to BUT Study and Examination Rules).
The final state examination traditionally consists of two parts. The first part is the defence of the diploma thesis, where the student presents his or her work (goal, methods, results) and responds to reviewer´s report. A discussion of the topic of the diploma thesis follows. The second part consists of a general discussion focusing on the areas of aerodynamics and flight mechanics, aircraft construction and strength, aircraft materials and technologies, and an optional part, which may concentrate on the field of airborne systems, aircraft engines or space technology.

Study plan creation

The rules and conditions of study programmes are determined by:
BUT STUDY AND EXAMINATION RULES,
BUT STUDY PROGRAMME STANDARDS,
STUDY AND EXAMINATION RULES of Brno University of Technology (USING "ECTS"),
DEAN’S GUIDELINE Rules for the organization of studies at FME (supplement to BUT Study and Examination Rules).

Availability for the disabled

Brno University of Technology acknowledges the need for equal access to higher education. There is no direct or indirect discrimination during the admission procedure or the study period. Students with specific educational needs (learning disabilities, physical and sensory handicap, chronic somatic diseases, autism spectrum disorders, impaired communication abilities, mental illness) can find help and counselling at Lifelong Learning Institute of Brno University of Technology. This issue is dealt with in detail in Rector's Guideline No. 11/2017 "Applicants and Students with Specific Needs at BUT". Furthermore, in Rector's Guideline No 71/2017 "Accommodation and Social Scholarship" students can find information on a system of social scholarships.

What degree programme types may have preceded

Graduates of the programme have the opportunity to continue in doctoral study programme with a focus on the aircraft design which is a part of Design and Process Engineering programme. FME BUT is also accredited for habilitation and professorship in the field of Design and Process Engineering.
The content of the programme is identical with Aircraft Design study branch which is a part of Aerospace Technology programme that is taught in Czech language.
