Study aims

The objectives of the study programme is to equip students with knowledge and skills in the field of mechanical engineering, technology and materials and to provide them with a broad knowledge that will allow them to continue to study the follow-up Master's degree programme in the field of mechanical engineering at Brno University of Technology or other universities in the Czech Republic or abroad. However, after completing the bachelor's degree programme, the graduates can decide not to continue their studies and apply for a job in a development, design or technical department of a company or an engineering company, or in civil services or commerce and they acquire their specialization in their workplace. The study programme is without specialisation.
Students will gain broad-based knowledge in the following areas:
• Mathematics and physics needed for further study,
• Design,
• Mechanics of solids,
• Engineering materials
• Manufacturing technology,
• Thermofluid mechanics,
• Applied informatics, automation, and electrical engineering,
• 3D modelling of machine parts,
• Calculations and designs of parts and mechanisms of machines.

Graduate profile

The graduate acquires a professional broad- based knowledge in the field of mechanical engineering. The graduate acquires competences that enable them to prepare effectively for further (Master's) studies. The graduates gain a professional broad-based knowledge, which allow them to continue to study the follow-up Master's degree programme in the field of mechanical engineering and material engineering.
However, after completing their Bachelor's degree, they can immediately pursue a career. The broad scope of the programme can be an advantage for students. Our graduates receive well rounded education, which opens many doors for them in the labour market. As a matter of fact, many employers require generally educated technical staff, because they carry out their own company trainings to narrow employees´ specialisation. Graduates of the programme can be employed in technical positions in design and technological departments of companies, in engineering companies, civil services or commerce.

Graduate Professional Knowledge Profile:
• The graduate is well prepared for a follow-up Master's degree in mechanical engineering, technology and materials at the University of Technology in Brno or other technical universities in the Czech Republic or abroad in particular.
• The graduate is also acquainted with fundamentals of manufacturing technology of machine component.
• The graduate can design and construct machine parts and simple components.

Graduate Professional Skills Profile:
• The graduate can analyse and design machine components and simple components and optimize their design, function, and material composition with respect to performance, ecological and economic parameters.
• The graduate has knowledge of the theory of flexibility and strength of components and functional assemblies, reliability, and durability of structures.
• The graduate can use wide theoretical knowledge, software tools, and methods of statistical data processing to solve engineering problems.
• The graduate is prepared for further education and use of future technologies and engineering methods.

Graduate attributes and professional competences:
• Graduates can demonstrate professional competences at a level corresponding to the contemporary findings in the field of engineering and materials.
• Graduates are eligible to pursue professions in the field of mechanical engineering and apply skills and computer literacy under the conditions of the Fourth Industrial Revolution.
• In addition to theoretical and professional knowledge, graduates become proficient in interpersonal competences and soft skills, they have knowledge of at least one foreign language, computer technology and they can work with programmes for designing machine parts and node machine.

Profession characteristics

Graduates acquire a broad-based professional knowledge in the field of mechanical engineering or material engineering. The knowledge enables them to continue their studies in any follow-up Master's degree programme in the field of mechanical engineering. After completing the programme the students are prepared to be able to study a Master’s degree programme abroad.
Nevertheless, after completing their Bachelor's degree, they can immediately pursue a career.

Fulfilment criteria

See applicable regulations, DEAN’S GUIDELINE Rules for the organization of studies at FME (supplement to BUT Study and Examination Rules).
The final state examination consists of a defence of the bachelor thesis and a discussion of the thesis topics. Both parts of the state final exam are held on the same date before the Commission for State Examinations. The state examination may be taken by a student who obtained the required credits in prescribed composition and submitted Bachelor’s thesis within a set deadline. The contents and structure of the final state examination shall be determined by the programme. The rules for organisation and course of the final state examinations are determined by internal standards of BUT and FME.

Study plan creation

The rules and conditions of study programmes are determined by:
BUT STUDY AND EXAMINATION RULES,
BUT STUDY PROGRAMME STANDARDS,
STUDY AND EXAMINATION RULES of Brno University of Technology (USING "ECTS"),
DEAN’S GUIDELINE Rules for the organization of studies at FME (supplement to BUT Study and Examination Rules).

Availability for the disabled

Brno University of Technology acknowledges the need for equal access to higher education. There is no direct or indirect discrimination during the admission procedure or the study period. Students with specific educational needs (learning disabilities, physical and sensory handicap, chronic somatic diseases, autism spectrum disorders, impaired communication abilities, mental illness) can find help and counselling at Lifelong Learning Institute of Brno University of Technology. This issue is dealt with in detail in Rector's Guideline No. 11/2017 "Applicants and Students with Specific Needs at BUT". Furthermore, in Rector's Guideline No 71/2017 "Accommodation and Social Scholarship" students can find information on a system of social scholarships.

What degree programme types may have preceded

The content of the proposed study programme is based on the Bachelor’s study programme within the Mechanical Engineering study programme (B3S-A). Graduates of the programme can continue their studies in the Master's degree programme in Mechanical Engineering (N-ENG-A) in English and obtain a Master's degree with the title of engineer. The programme is considered to be the most effective way to continue a Master’s degree at FME or a Master's degree at another foreign university. After completing the Master's degree, students will be able to continue in newly accredited doctoral study programmes in English such as Design and Process Engineering (D-KPI-A), Power Engineering (D-ENE-A), Applied Mechanics (D-IME-A), Manufacturing Technology (D-STG-A) and Materials Sciences (D-MAT-A).
