Course detail
Design of Machines and Instruments
FSI-YDE Acad. year: 2024/2025 Winter semester
The subject follows the previous Design Workshop of Industrial Design and educates students to a more comprehensive understanding of design work with overlap in more fields in solving the design of functionally and structurally more complex products. The thematic assignments focus on the field of industrial interiors and household appliances. A recommended topic is, for example, the design of a domestic gas boiler, a fireplace stove, a submersible pump or a vacuum cleaner. The main output of the work is a presentation model of the proposed solution, depending on the type of product processed, in an appropriate scale or 1:1. The students are expected to use the already acquired experience with the Adobe and Rhinoceros 3D programs.

Prerequisites
The prerequisite for this course is the acquisition of the necessary knowledge, skills and general creative erudition in the previous study. Students have mastered the basics of drawing and modeling. It is also necessary to understand the basic spatial creation, artistic composition and realization of three-dimensional models. The proposals require mastery of design solutions for industrial products. Knowledge of Rhinoceros 3D, Photoshop or CorelDraw is desirable.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes
Requirements for graded course units: Attendance in class, submission of assigned projects on time and in sufficient quality. Presentation of a completed project. The design and level of presentation of each project will be evaluated separately.
The resulting evaluation consists of evaluations of projects and exclusive tasks. The total number of points is 100. The resulting classification is defined by the ECTS scale.
If some of the projects receive less than half of the maximum points, the final evaluation of the course is "failed".
According to the article No. 13 of Study and Examination Rules of Brno University of Technology ECTS evaluation degree scale is used. . If some of the projects are awarded less than 50 pts., final evaluation of the course is "failed". The course is evaluated with the following grades: ECTS EVALUATION DEGREES / PTS. RATING / NUMERIC RATING: A / 100 – 90 / 1 / Excellent; B /89 – 80 / 1,5 / Very good; C / 79 – 70 / 2 / Good; D / 69 – 60 / Satisfactory; E / 59 – 50 / Sufficient; F / 49 – 0 / 4 / Failed.
Compulsory attendance at seminars. Education runs according to the week schedule. The way of compensation of missed seminars is specified by the tutor.

Aims
The subject is aimed at further developing the students' skills and creative abilities to solve more demanding design problems with respect to technical and technological limitations in the design of a real product. Students should be able to design, create and work with a potentially realizable output.
Students will be able to solve elementary and more difficult industrial product design projects and present their work.
