Metallurgy of Cast Iron

FSI-PLL Acad. year: 2021/2022 Winter semester

Grades and properties of cast iron, structure, crystallization. Chemical composition. Mechanical, physical a technological properties. Alloyed cast irons. Melting equipment, metallurgical processes. Production of lammelar graphit iron, spheroidal, vermicular and malleable iron. Raw materials, composition of charge. Control of chemical composition, thermoanalysis, control of mechanical properties. Metallurgicaly based defects.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

Ability to operate metalurgical processes by melting different cast iron grades, heat treatment and quality control

Prerequisites

Basics of chemistry, knowlidges of structure and properties of metals and alloys

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

The course is taught through lectures explaining the basic principles and theory of the discipline. Teaching is suplemented by practical laboratory work.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

Credit: Attendandance and appropriate knowledges in courses, passing 2 tests in the course
of semester
Exam: Credit, numerical part of exam, verbal part of exam

Aims

The aim of course is to get knowlidges about structure and properties of different cast iron grades, principle of melting process in particular melting furnaces, metal quality control and analysis of metallurgical defects.

Specification of controlled education, way of implementation and compensation for absences

2 tests in the period of semestr, compensation of absence – by personal agreement with teacher
