Aircraft Propulsion Units
FSI-ELV Acad. year: 2021/2022 Winter semester
The course deals with topics related to the aircraft propulsion. Basic knowledge at a level of secondary school physics and mathematics regarding the structure, function and operation of a piston gas engine are revised at the beginning of the course. Principals, structure, function and operation of jet engines of above all aircraft of the efficiency level B and A certified according to JAR/FAR 25 are dealt with.

Learning outcomes of the course unit
Students will learn of the structure and operation of aircraft propulsion units that are necessary for a professional pilot performance in the commercial air traffic.
Prerequisites
Basic knowledge of secondary-level applied mathematics, applied mechanics and physics.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods
The course is taught through lectures explaining the basic principles and theory of the discipline. Exercises are focused on practical topics presented in lectures.
Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes
The course-unit credit requirements: attendance at exercises (80% at the minimum) and working out a semester project. Exam evaluation fulfils the University requirements.

Aims
The course objective is to familiarize students with function, structure and operation of aircraft propulsion units that is necessary for passing the ATPL (A) exam at CAA.
Specification of controlled education, way of implementation and compensation for absences
The attendance at both lectures and seminars is compulsory (80% at the minimum), and it is checked and recorded. The absence (in justifiable cases) can be compensated by personal consultation with the lecturer and working out individually assignments. Individual assignments must be finished and handed in during the course-unit credit week at the latest.

5. Propeller, types, construction, parameters, control and operations limits.
6. Prop-jet engines, principles of function, theoretical bases.
7. Construction of prop-jet engines, parts and their function.
8. Characterization of jet engines, performance, reliability.
9. Systems of jet engines, peripheral facilities.
10. Systems of jet engines, modes of running, operation limitations.
11. Aeronautical power plant controlling, indication instruments, emergency procedures.
12. Fuel for aeronautical power plant, classification, characteristics.
13. Lubrication oils of aeronautical power plants, power plant maintenance and operation.
