The Brno University of Technology (FUT) organized a children's university "BUT Junior" for students of primary schools and junior high schools. Each month, one of the faculties prepares a programme, and in November it was the turn of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering. Children could choose one of three programmes.
The topic of passive aircraft safety was introduced to children by researchers from the Institute of Aerospace Engineering. During the introductory lecture they discussed the consequences of aircraft accidents, technologies and methods that protect pilots and passengers. The theoretical part was followed by a practical task: to design, build and test their own passive protection system and rescue a raw egg falling from a height to the hard ground. The teams were able to test their engineering solutions in the institute's test room.
Machine building and metrology issues were presented by colleagues from the Institute of Production Machines, Systems and Robotics. This included PC programming of a CNC machine, a visit to specialised laboratories where metrology is intertwined with machine building and manufacturing by chip and laser machining. For example, the BUT Juniors had the opportunity to take a brief peek at the production of the legendary "Hedgehog in a Cage".
Aerospace engineering from different angles was discussed by PhD students from the Institute of Machine and Industrial Design. The lecture was combined with virtual reality and experiments focusing on the composition of the Earth's atmosphere, the boundaries of outer space, microgravity, space technology, etc. From the 3D printing workshop, the children took away a key ring in the shape of a rocket.
