High school Poštová 9 from Košice, Slovakia, is proud of its first place in the MATHING competition. The competition is organized for the fifteenth year by the Institute of Mathematics of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering BUT. This year, the organizers evaluated a total of 1561 submitted solutions.
"This year the participation was record high. The competition involved 221 teams, a total of 1487 high school students from 114 schools. The majority of them, namely 81, were domestic secondary schools, but 33 schools from Slovakia also took part," said Viera Štoudková Růžičková, one of the competition organisers from the Institute of Mathematics.
The evaluation of the submitted examples required two weeks of work and involved twelve evaluators. For example, the students had to calculate the appropriate date for the FME alumni reunion, mix raspberry lemonade in the right proportion, determine the size of a sheet that can fit a pizza cut in half, find out who wins in a board game or calculate the volume of a fence.
The MATHING competition was held for the first time this year with a new name, but it continues a 15-year tradition of online math competitions organized by FME.
