In harmony with conclusions of a number of world energy and environment congresses (Houston 1998, Kyoto 1992), there are efforts exerted worldwide to maximize renewable and alternative energy sources utilization. More extensive utilization of renewable energy sources is expected to reduce primary energy sources depletion and to be global climate and air cleanliness friendly. Biomass and wastes constitute significant potential altenative energy sources of the Czech Republic. Alternative fuels in Czech Republic are utilized by combustion in boilers. From the point of view of most cost-effective utilization, this technology, however, has been surpassed. The future now lies with new technologies based on renewable fuels gasification in CHP generation. The paper offers results of experimental and theoretical research conducted at the Brno School of Technology with focus, in particular, on fuel impact on gas composition and its properties. Major technological and economic problems to be adressed are outlined. Fluid-bed atmospheric gasification is applied. Small decentralized CHP plants are of relevance in regions with affordable biomass and industrial wastes.
