This study rigorously investigates the suitability of Physical Vapor Deposition (PVD) coated cermet substrates in the machining of nodular cast iron—a domain traditionally dominated by other materials like cemented carbide. The research meticulously assesses the impact of PVD coatings on cermet tools by examining wear patterns on the flank face, analyzing surface roughness, and utilizing vibration analysis to measure machining stability. Despite the inherent brittleness of cermet and challenges with material adhesion on the rake face, it was found that PVD coatings could indeed extend the operational life of cermet tools. However, their overall performance still lags behind that of multi-layer coated cemented carbide tools. This detailed analysis provides valuable insights into the potential and limitations of using coated cermets in specific industrial machining applications, highlighting how surface roughness is maintained across various stages of tool wear.
