This paper demonstrates the results of testing toroidal bearings using the parameters extracted from Acoustic Emission testing. The aim is to find the characteristics of the Rolling Contact Fatigue (RCF) in these special bearings during testing. Toroidal bearings are characterized by their special design, which combines the self-aligning capability with the axial displacement ability, which contributed to the significant increase in their applications, especially in the wind turbine industry. The main concentration of this paper has been on the period of test before the appearance of pitting. It is thought that by analyzing and studying the Acoustic Emission (AE) signal in the period before pitting starts to take place, it is possible to specify the pattern of the signal which will distinguish the initiation of pitting. And it will enable us later to better understand the behavior of the specimen during the last stages of the test. The experiments took place in a specially-designed stand for this type of bearing to obtain the best results from AE sensors. This study is an initial step towards other more advanced steps to better understand the crack initiation and pitting mechanisms in the specially important toroidal bearings.
