Abstract The paper deals with development and application of computational approaches for noise and vibration evaluations of automotive or machinery gearboxes. The proposed approach is based on the virtual prototypes of the gearbox. The virtual prototypes incorporate, predominantly, multibody dynamics and finite element method strategies. The whole computational model, i.e. the virtual gearbox, enables to calculate acoustic characteristics like sound pressure level on the gearbox surrounding sphere. Multibody dynamic results, e.g. surface normal velocities, are basic inputs for noise distribution evaluation. A specialized experimental gearbox is designed for a validation of the virtual gearbox. The experimental gearbox is investigated both in experimental and computational way. Later, the verified virtual gearbox is applied to a real heavy duty truck transmission.
