With the lecture "Journey to the Sun" and programming the movement of a car or a robotic vehicle, the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering tried to attract the children who visited us as part of this year's programme of the Children's Technical University BUT JUNIOR.
Brno University of Technology is organising the Children's University with the aim of motivating pupils in the second grade of primary schools and lower secondary schools to study engineering. Each of the faculties of the Brno University of Technology is preparing a programme for one Saturday morning. On the first Saturday in April, a group of fifty children visited the FME.
The children were welcomed by Dr. Jana Hoderova from the Institute of Mathematics with a lecture "Journey to the Sun". She introduced the pupils to the natural phenomenon of solar eclipses, explained the concept of the solar corona and explained the possibilities of capturing it on images. She also shared her own experiences from international solar eclipse expeditions in an engaging narrative. There was also information about this year's total solar eclipse, which she and her colleagues will observe on 20 April in Australia.
After the introductory lecture, the students split up. They had a choice of two workshops "Show what you can do with LEGO MINDSTORMS" and "Programming and robotics is what we enjoy".
Under the guidance of colleagues from the Mechatronics Laboratory and the Institute of Automation and Computer Science, the children were able to build, program and move their vehicles. All this in just two hours spent in the laboratory.
